JW Anderson gave us clothes made from clay!
By Barry Pierce | Fashion | 17 September 2023

The second all the invitees received their invites in the form of a brick of Play-Doh clunking through their letterbox, it was a sign that JW Anderson SS24 was going to be a joy. Of course, one doesn’t usually associate Play-Doh with fashion, but if anyone was going to make it happen it was Jonathan Anderson. He proved his alchemy from that very first look, a hoody and shorts combo made from some wild form of clay that looked so utterly bizarre, and yet it worked so, so well. The boundaries kept getting pushed with a series of heavy, bulky Play-Doh tees that looked like they probably weighed about a metric tonne but aren’t we meant to suffer for fashion? These were paired with matching trousers that continued the clay-in-plastic aesthetic.

MA1 bomber jackets made a happy appearance, exploding at the seams with feathers, while the matching bottoms were tuffed harem pants that billowed so much at the bottom that the calf pockets looked large enough to store a laptop. Set to a mash-up soundtrack that warped Ethel Cain’s Crush with Cher’s Believe (major!), it was a Pee-wee’s Playhouse of a collection, and we mean that in the best possible way.
