Globetrotter

Bottega Veneta SS24 was a trip around the world

At Bottega Veneta, we were taken around the world in (almost) 80 looks. The warehouse where the show took place had its floor completely covered in a cartoonish interpretation of oceans and continents, so when the models strolled out, they were literally walking all over the world. This was the main theme of the collection, a globetrotting adventure that took us to every corner of the planet. No one look was distinctly of one place, they were mixed and matched. Asia met America, Europe met Africa, and so on.

Take, for example, Look 18, a structured leather dress with leaf-life accoutrement that suggests a tribal influence, or Look 48, the shawl giving Native American vibes but the skirt being suggestive of something far more contemporary. As the show notes explained: “Notions of ‘national dress’ become ‘international dress’, a blending of archetypes from all over the world, nomadic in mood and meaning, at times wearing flags of imaginary places.”

Bottega is nothing without its accessories and this show certainly brought them. Leather newspapers from around the globe morphed into Foulard bags, tropical leaf, pool blue, raffia and rope shoes and bags that were all realised in highly crafted leathers; while ceramic and oversized Intrecciato Sardine bags took on an almost novelty aspect. The classic Bottega rattan weave was out in force, naturally, across a whole range of bags that came in, seemingly, every size. It was a blockbuster of a show that left us jetlagged in the best way possible.
