Nomadland

Iran’s nomadic population inspired Paria Farzaneh’s adventurous collection
Fashion | 17 September 2022

Comprising 1.68% of Iran’s general population (around 1.2 million people), Iran’s nomadic population is one of the biggest in the world. And like many who live outside of society’s margins, rules and regulations, they refuse to stop and settle, charging forth with their own prerogatives, guided by nothing but a compass and the feelings deep in their gut.

Their bravery and courage guided Farzaneh’s striking, sport-infused SS23 offering. There were hooded gilets, slender button-downs and baggy cargo pants, all born out of pragmatic function in light, crinkled materials. Here too were Farzaneh’s signature diamond cuts, following behind furry hats and sporty cross-body bags. The apparition of lace underscored it all with an air of delicacy, softening streetwear staples like zip hoodies and tailored shorts, cut long and flouncy, like the underbelly of a dark cloud.

The designer’s palette of bold purples, acidic greens and blazing lipstick reds became markers for the tribes, in hard-to-miss bold shades that uphold tradition and cloak glistening veils and lace slip dresses. Flitting around the foliage of The Phoenix Garden, a community space in the heart of Tottenham Court Road, a glimpse of these forever travellers couldn’t be harder to miss, nor their tenacity harder to feel.
