“We came to wreck everything and ruin your life”

Matthew Miller FW14
By Thomas Davis | 8 January 2014

Cut throat masculinity – shaven heads, pierced septum’s and emotional anarchy. That’s exactly what Matthew Miller funnelled into the heart of his FW14 show. Bleak dystopian futures were spelled out onto black lettered flags with shady silhouettes and the glares of genderless models.

A restrictive and muted choice of fabric colour intelligently drew interest towards the smaller detailing in the show. Miller also managed to combine an air of youthful rebellion with razor sharp utilitarian tailoring using quality fabric produced with Danish fabric experts Kvadrat. Trousers were presented with hand sewn swatches or were entirely pieced together from many separate pieces.

Experimental layering of  ‘hate love’, ‘rent life’ and ‘we will build utopia’ sloganed tabards helped translate themes of youth culture and angst onto the catwalk, further highlighting the designers support for freedom of expression.
