Big kids

A sense of playfulness often pervades Jonathan Anderson’s output. This season he was letting us all be big kids, transforming the brand’s HQ on Place Saint-Sulpice into a pom-pom-filled adult playground – a not-so-subtle hint that he had a lot of fun in store with his new-season offering. 

Drawing upon the archive of American photographer Duane Michals, Anderson’s models looked as if they’d delved into some sort of highbrow dressing-up box. Clad in Elmer-esque check two-pieces and patchwork shirts, a selection of men stood with bare bottom halves or with their chests on display; this added a mature feel to the line which otherwise had a distinctly childlike ambience. Fringed longline vests were paired with wide-leg trousers in soft ecru, as bucket hats felt more folkish than fit for the streets – especially in comparison to the iterations seen at the likes of Valentino and Fendi. Of particular note was a Dumbo-print backpack created in conjunction with Disney; an accoutrement-cum-emblem of a collection that was as functional as it was fantastical.
