Holy psychedelia

Issey Miyake Men SS17
Fashion | 25 June 2016

Entitled ‘Journey from a white page’, Issey Miyake’s SS17 collection showed the gradual transformation of ideas from a blank palette to a flurry of colours, via an experimental take on elegance. With a merger of psychedelic rock and traditional Indian influences, the live band played to the laid back tune of the Varanasi Indian and Holi Festival inspired collection.

The tie-dye like graphics started out simple, but as the show went on, the models flaunted more and more complex and abstract designs. Combined with pleated lines, ripples and tailored folds, Miyake presented a diverse but grounded collection.

Textural prominence is key to this collection, but it is also inherent to Issey Miyake’s heritage. The method of  garment pleating via heat-press: in 1993, the line PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE was born, putting a name to the technique that has marked Miyake’s territory since the late 1980s.
