New family member

Fendi FW21

Paola, Franca, Anna, Carla and Alda. Family inspired Kim Jones’ debut FW21 collection, to borrow a Fendi-ism. The five Fendi sisters who ran the label in its second generation served as muses. Often photographed in a pack, the clique were as visually striking as you might expect from a cadre of business moguls ruling the mid-century fashion scene. Here, their wardrobes were reinterpreted by Jones in modernised proportions. Softer silhouettes were a recurring idea. Silk-satins beamed, and knitted everythings had a glowy outline of fuzz.

More recent members of the family also featured. There’s a ‘Silvia’ jacket after Silvia Venturini Fendi’s favoured cut, and (virtually family), a few Lagerfeld iconographies taken from archival sketches. A ‘Karligraphy’ monogram mimicking the late designer’s handwriting became a wax-seal necklace pendant, mimicking a heritage crest.

As the freshest inductee to the tree, Jones made his own sentimental offerings, and referenced his couture collection from back in January – his actual debut for the label. Marbled silk, appliqué rosettes and organza embroideries were the mementos. Chicness clearly runs in the family.
