Many young brands look to the past for inspiration, but Cottweiler is rooted firmly in tomorrow. Designers Matthew Dainty and Ben Cottrell, who this time last year were announced NEWGEN’s latest support recipients, have cemented their brand as the destination for elevated sporty clothes – with zero visual fuss.
For their first catwalk show at LCM they stepped away from the designated BFC space, instead sending attendees to their own space. Broken crockery reminiscent of giant eggshells implied a dystopian alien setting, and the clothes were a uniform for the society in habitat.
‘A future community of a new mediterranean’ read the show notes. Meaning? Well, Cottweiler are fond of themes juxtaposing nature and technology – last season they mused on the devastating environmental impact of technological advancements, specifically pertaining to agronomy.
Here, they focussed on the importance of Mediterranean culture (Matthew’s grandmother is from one of the Aegean islands) and envisioned technical clothes for a future generation. Think seemingly simple knits comprised of complex fabric blends, and next-level tracksuits made from transparent, shimmering layers.
