Ann Demeulemeester is a line synonymous with deconstruction and minimalism, imbued with the reputation for excellence that comes with being one of the Antwerp Six. With this (as ever) in mind, designer Sébastien Meunier championed Romance with a radical edge for SS17.

Models looked like young punk protégés and walked to The Velvet Underground’s I’m Set Free. Garments came seamlessly hewed, but underscored and rather than being an obsolete element to construction, tattered hems, piping and thick ribbon stitches added contemporary nuances.

Images of a phoenix rising decked knitwear, kerchiefs pinned to military jackets and trench coats, while mesh tops were inscribed with ‘I’m Red With Love’ in DIY needlework, paired with sparse hanging feathers. The ‘inside-out’ look of woollens was particularly stunning, and the monochrome palette – with the inclusion of navy blue – pulled focus straight to the patterns used, the styling, and the modern elegance that ran from organza tunics to street couture.

Meunier’s symmetry for the feminine and masculine ideal is poetically arched, constructing clothing that shows an eye not only for detail, but restraint. We’re ready for the next uprising – we already have the outfits.
