Over the past half century China has become the world’s second-largest economy; this meteoric rise has seen a boom in manufacturing, technology, property and the culture sector. The country is home to some of the wealthiest art collectors on the planet; Chinese billionaires are funding the build of new galleries and art museums that rival New York’s Museum Mile and London’s South Bank, and are turning major cities like Shanghai into new global centres for art.

Business tycoon and cultural entrepreneur, Adrian Cheng, is the founder behind the K11 Art Foundation (KAF), “a registered not-for-profit organisation, which supports the development of Chinese contemporary art from Greater China by providing a creative platform that nurtures artistic talents and brings them to the international stage.”

This spring, KAF will present After Us, their first major project in China in partnership with the New Museum in New York. The exhibition, curated by Lauren Cornell (New Museum Curator and Associate Director of Technology Initiatives) and Baoyang Chen (appointed by KAF), will explore how Chinese and international artists use surrogates, proxies, and avatars to expand the notion of being human.

“The New Museum is pleased to continue its partnership with the K11 Art Foundation this spring following the successful Museum residency and exhibition with artist Cheng Ran in New York in 2016.” said Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director, New Museum. “The New Museum has a history of championing artists working at the intersection of art and technology and we are thrilled that Cornell’s expertise in this area can expand KAF’s mission to bring new, boundary-pushing artists to Shanghai.”

Opening in March, After Us will feature work in a range of mediums from sculpture to installation, photography, performance, video and works engaged with augmented and virtual reality. The full list of artist includes: Dora Budor, Chen Zhou, Ian Cheng, Cecile Evans, Jodi, Li Liao, Lin Ke, Lu Yang, Miao Ying, Takeshi Murata, Katja Novitskova, Jon Rafman, Rachel Rossin, Stewart Uoo, Yu Honglei  in a range of mediums from sculpture to installation, photography, performance, video and works engaged with augmented and virtual reality.

After us is at the chi K11 art museum, Shanghai, from 17th March 2017, co-presented by the New Museum and the K11 Art Foundation K11ArtFoundation.org newmuseum.org
