When you see the name ‘David Lynch’ on the Director’s credit you can be certain to expect three things: his signature brand of whimsical visuals; cryptic dialogue; and an immersive and unsettling soundscape. A new book, titled Beyond the Beyond: Music from the Films of David Lynch, delves into the filmmaker’s soundtracks and traces the sonic mindset behind each of his off-kilter landmarks.

In terms of iconic movie soundtrack moments, Lynch occupies many of the top spots. From Isabella Rossellini’s captivating performance of Blue Velvet in Lynch’s film of the same name, through the unnervingly seductive Angelo Badalamenti composed Twin Peaks theme song, and on to the pulsing electronic rock sounds of Lost Highway, featuring the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. Alluring soundtracks have remained a constant throughout Lynch’s oeuvre.

Away from his cinematic projects, Lynch’s relationship with music broadens, having created music videos for musicians such as Chris Isaak, Sparks and Rammstein, he also has two solo records under his belt, Crazy Clown Time (2011) and The Big Dream (2013).

”Sound is almost like a drug. It’s so pure that when it goes in your ears, it instantly does something to you.” – David Lynch

Co-produced by Lynch, the tome is set for release in April 2016, appropriately proceeding the David Lynch Foundation (DLF) benefit – a foundation committed committed to teaching transcendental meditation techniques to those who can benefit from the unconventional practice. This new book taps into the foundation’s lineup of creative supporters, featuring interviews with the likes of Sky Ferreira, Lykke Li, Karen O, The Flaming Lips, Angelo Badalamenti and Donovan.
