LONDON, FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER – SUNDAY 8th NOVEMBER 2015

Film

Mad fer it!
With the recent announcement of three mega Stone Roses gigs, the latest 90s resurgence has just kicked into gear. Therefore it’s perfect timing to go see the new film adaptation of John Niven’s dark novel, Kill Your Friends, centred around the Britpop movement.

Set in 1997, we come face to face with Steven Stelfox, a misanthropic A&R exec played by HERO cover star Nicholas Hoult. Stelfox is as ruthless as they come, clawing his way to the top via violence, drugs and a spot of murder.

With a killer 90s soundtrack featuring Blur, Oasis, The Chemical Brothers, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Radiohead, amongst others, you’ll be searching for those forgotten baggy jeans and bucket hats in no time.

Think American Psycho meets 24 Hour Party People. Get ready for a bloody good time.

Gig

Giorgio by Moroder
The grandfather of modern dance music, Giorgio Moroder’s use of early synthesizer and sequencing technology revolutionised the sound of disco music in the late seventies.

The first super-producer, the point at which the person pressing the buttons and building the backing track begins to grace the cover of the album too, the Italian producer boasts three Oscars under his belt for his work on Top Gun, Flashdance and Midnight Express, as well as three Grammys and four Golden Globes.

Perhaps his most iconic work, Donna Summer’s I Feel Love. A song of seismic importance, on hearing the track Brian Eno famously told David Bowie: “I have heard the sound of the future” while they recorded together in Berlin in 1977.

Moroder is in London for a special one-off gig this weekend, let’s just hope he sticks to the classics.

Giorgio Moroder plays at KOKO on November 6th, tickets are available here

Gig

There’s a storm a’coming
Another man who combines style and substance with certified results is Sheffield luminary Richard Hawley.

The quiffed crooner is a romantic at heart, a modern man’s Elvis. The former Longpigs and Pulp guitarist-turned Brit award and Mercury prize-nominated solo artist is a real National treasure, a guitar wielding trooper on the front-line of British rock and roll.

If you like your gigs with a heavy dose of atmospheric goosebumps, Hawley is a certified must-see. We give it 60 seconds until he has the whole of the audience wrapped around his finger.

Richard Hawley plays at Camden Roundhouse on November 8th. Tickets here.

Fireworks

Dynamite
Here’s a freebie for you. As it’s Bonfire weekend head to the highest point at Hampstead Heath, take a bottle of champers and watch the fireworks light up the London sky.

This way you avoid all the rammed fireworks events, and yet you get to see all of them at once, for free. Perfecto!

Festival

Fiesta
Mexico’s Día’s de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) is London bound. This weekend Wahaca Day of the Dead Festival takes place on Tobacco Dock, expect sugar skulls a-plenty.

As you’d expect, the food available comes muy rico. Stalls will be serving up Mexican delights, including tacos, tortas, smokey barbacoa, roasted elotes and fresh churros. And plenty of the hard stuff too (tequila and mezcal).

Musically, the line up is just as tasty. The Horrors, Savages, Crystal Fighters and many more, including Mexrrissey, a mexican Morrissey tribute act. Morriachi!

Wahaca Day of the Dead Festival takes place at Tobacco Dock on 7 November
