As the sun finally begins to creep out from behind the clouds we’re rinsing it for all it’s worth and asking some of our favourite bands to curate summer playlists for us. Blast out the winter cobwebs and soundtrack our yearly hit of vitamin D and all that.

Kicking us off in fine form is Wolf Alice. It’s not often that a band flirts as much press attention as this North London band have before even releasing a full length studio album. But this is no press circle jerk, the acclaim is justified. Having met in 2010 Ellie Rowsell and lead guitarist Jeff Oddie began as an acoustic duo mastering the open-mic nights, after-school clubs and dingy basement shows. Then, with the addition of Joel Amey (drums) and Theo Ellis (bass), they made like Dylan and went electric, dials were spun to 11 and they morphed into a grungey scuzzed up four piece.

With two killer EPs under their belt and a debut full length record My Love Is Cool set for release on June 30th Wolf Alice are hitting their stride and there are zero symptoms of fatigue. The quartet’s success lies in the lynchpins of their sound, the juxtaposition of the quiet-loud-quiet song structure marrying infectious melodies with a ferocious underbelly. Wolf Alice bark louder than most, there’s just something about the chaos of fuzzed guitars, clattering drums, and a squally, lip-curled girl vocal that hits the sweet spot. Dancing between genres Wolf Alice embrace disparate elements with ease. Their versatility is a strength not to be undervalued, juggling disparate elements with ease, carving out a space entirely their own they metabolise their influences with a heavy dose of bold panache.

To celebrate the record release, Joel from Wolf Alice has put together our first Summer Playlist of the season, a full throttle bunch of tunes that we dare you not to slut drop to, at least once. Press play and get ur freak on.

Scud Books by Hudson Mohawke
“This is my song of the summer for sure, and the video when it drops with the crowd is my idea of beautiful,” says Joel.

One Great Song and I Could Change the World by Swim Deep
“A really great video by really great people. It’s like a movie! Ozzie kills it and James’s dance moves prove he has balls the size of Saturn.”

What Will You Say by Jeff Buckley
“I’m getting pumped for Glastonbury and this rough, VHS footage of one of the best performances ever is reminding me it ain’t nothing unless you give it everything.”

Eventually by Tame Impala
“The best band of the last five years just released the best song of the last five months.”

Avon by Queens of the Stone Age (feat. Dave Grohl)
“Same thing as the Jeff Buckley video really; get your freak on to some seminal festival performances.

Get UR Freak On by Missy Elliot
“Get your freak on to Get UR Freak On.”

Flying Golem by Wand
Love everything about this band, best distortion, best riffs, best videos.

Saturday Saviour by Failure
Cool legends I got to see at SXSW and this song has been on repeat since.

Hey Ya! by Outkast
Because it reminds me of summers gone by. Wearing new clothes, drinking in the park, everyone pretending to know how to dance.

Duality by Slipknot
Because it reminds me of summers gone by. Not washing, learning how to play the guitar in Drop B, considering getting a lip ring.

My Love is Cool by Wolf Alice is out now on Dirty Hit Records
