Ever since Stone Island released their first collection in 1982, they have demonstrated what can happen at the intersection between technology and fashion. Their experimentation with technical fabrics has changed the game entirely, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved by a fashion house. Naturally, the story of Stone Island would easily fill out an entire gallery exhibition, so, that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Selected Works Seoul ‘982-‘023: The Stone Island Archive is a major archival exhibition taking place 5th – 9th September in the South Korean capital during Frieze Seoul, featuring over seventy key Stone Island pieces, from their very first SS82 show to the present day. Visitors to the exhibition will first encounter a ghost-white, soundproofed space, acting as a transition chamber for what is to come. The first engagement with Stone Island pieces will be interactive, with a series of refrigerators containing new iterations of the Stone Island Ice Jacket. Visitors will be able to touch these thermosensitive pieces, to see for themselves how their appearance dramatically changes with heat.

The main hall of the exhibition will feature a cathedral-like display of 45 archival pieces, representing important milestones in the history of Stone Island, including the Tela Stella cape from SS82, the Glazed silk light jacket from AW87, and Ventile® Ghost Piece jacket from SS11.

Overlooking the main hall, a mezzanine floor will feature a display of fourteen Reflective Jackets, one of Stone Island’s most revered fabric developments, and closing the exhibition will be seven rare pieces from the Prototype Research_Series, complete with films that document the innovations within each garment.

For any Stone Island acolyte (which honestly should be everybody!), this exhibition is going to be the pilgrimage of a lifetime.
