Moonwalks‘ upcoming album Western Mystery Tradition was conceived in what the Detroit trio describe as a “polar vortex”. As the Michagen winter blew hard, the band holed themselves up in their city’s supposedly haunted Masonic Temple – a vast, neo-gothic lodge that belonged to the Free Mason’s Detroit chapter – to record their latest record. Amongst the building’s stories and spirits, the band conjured their own sonic mystique. Through pulsing riffs and analogue flicks, the album, titled Western Mystery Tradition, guides the band towards a more polished and nuanced output – lifting their DIY space-rock roots to soaring new heights.

In anticipation of their record release later this month, we exclusively premiere the incredible stop-motion video for Moonwalks’ latest single, Natural Possession. Directed by Julia Khoroshilov, the footage follows the band on a psychedelic trip to Coney Island.

“Natural Possession was recorded primarily at the Masonic Temple in Detroit,” the band tells us, “[It] features parts of an early demo version of the song that was recorded in Moonwalks’ home on the west side of Detroit. The idea originally formed during the early hours of an overnight voyage across the Mediterranean Sea as we made our way to the island of Sardinia to begin our first European tour in 2017. The song encapsulates a cinematic feeling of the passage of time and space.”
