Trust Christopher Shannon to take a very British reference and stretch it to something even weirder. The past few seasons have taken in obsessive hoarders, clubbing at Garlands and a footballer who’s popped to get a pint of milk and got soaked in the rain – in the 1970s.

Creating jumpers of the season for FW14, the menthol fag packet twisted ‘Embarro Mental’ the best of the trilogy, Shannon also pre-empted the renaissance of (Adidas) Gazelles last time round. The designer is a name at the forefront of London menswear because he is determined that it be more than ‘nice’; it needs to be interesting too.

“It’s all a bit Emo,” says Shannon. “I kept thinking ‘where have all the Emos gone?’ I was at one of those stores that sell all the rights of passage things teens get into and they’re the same as they ever were. Joss sticks and dream catchers, all that gubbins that takes on some spiritual meaning.

I’m always drawn to things that I find gross. I don’t see the point in looking at Céline which is obviously brilliant and modern and then just doing that. Those stores with all their tribal tattoos and dolphin motifs, crystals, Emo slogan t-shirts, I suppose they are the opposite of the high street, one last place of supposed rebellion.

I think I’ve mused Matt Ardell a bit this season. He’s not as sporty as last season. I found a great book called In My Room: Teenagers In Their Bedrooms, it was so reminiscent of that time, all that planning, finding your way.

Sometimes in the past I’ve dropped ideas when it’s better to develop them, I decided I wanted to bring more pieces back  We’ve worked into outerwear and graphic knits, I’m keen to do more shirts though, I’ve quite missed them.”

Christopher Shannon presents his SS15 collection on Sunday 15th June. Stay tuned to HERO for full fashion week coverage, from London, Florence, Milan and Paris
