After crossing paths with Hublot last year by winning their 2019 Design Prize, Samuel Ross has just been announced as the brand’s newest ambassador, sparking a creative partnership that begins with a specially commissioned sculpture from the designer.

Still only 29, Ross’ achievements better resemble someone twice his age. Having started A-COLD-WALL* in 2015 (after being invited by Virgil Abloh to join Off-White aged 21), he has gone from strength to strength, winning awards, partnering on multiple collaborations and earning international praise for his bold cross-fusion of utilitarian function and sculptural form.

Hublot have tapped directly into that spirit, evidenced by the sculpture produced by Ross to commemorate the achievement. Combining granite, steel and aluminium into a polygon that’s designed to be held and touched, the sculpture bears shades of Franz West’s Passtücke in its tactile design as well as the legend of British sculpture, frequently referenced by Ross: Anthony Caro.

“Hublot symbolises daring innovation, the fusion of time between tradition and innovation, and the endless capacity to invent and reinvent materials,” said Ross of his new role. “Our collaboration reflects how we create and make decisions: quickly, efficiently and precisely. My sculpture tells the story of Hublot using simple, clean lines, with a monochrome palette of hues, a touch of vivid colour, and a play on oversized dimensions.”
