Satanic Meditation

Halloween playlist: Chastity – seriously sinister tracks from the Canadian noise merchant
Music | 31 October 2017

Can you feel that brooding tension in the air? Halloween is just around the corner and if the pretence of cheap wigs, plastic teeth and sexy horror character outfits aren’t doing it for you this weekend we’ve got a killer playlist by Canadian musician Brandon Williams – AKA Chastity – that serves up a blood-thirsty mix of tricks and treats.

Born in Whitby, Ontario – a sleepy suburbia well removed from the stirring city of Toronto – Williams found himself amongst a youth culture bored with their surroundings and seeking escape in the form of music. Venting that frustration into his creativity, the result is a brooding mix of palpable noise punk wrapped up in twisted melodies: Slightly unhinged, totally uncompromising.

Having released his debut record, Tape, last year – a visceral hotbed of urgency – Williams is back with a new five-track EP, titled Chains, and he’s ramped up the volume: “When I’m drawn to write I’m either sad or I am pissed. The world has changed since writing my last release, and both the sad and pissed feelings have since increased.”

With his Halloween mix, Williams has indulged his inner demons with a ghoulish blend of Satanic meditation, 00s hip hop and, erm, Beethoven (of course). No matter what you’re up to this Halloween, pump this one out and raise the demons (and the neighbours).
