Twists and turns

MM6 Maison Margiela abstracted the everyday

MM6 Maison Margiela unveiled its FW24 collection in a white curtained show space in Milan yesterday, delivering a collection that twisted an abstract vision of the everyday wardrobe. Over the past few seasons, the brand has perfected the art of deception and this season the illusions continued: jackets, cardigans and coats may appear to be just as they seem, yet slits under the arms allow cardigans to transform into capes, jackets mimic dresses and pillowcases take the form of tops.

Angular blazers were worn with their collars popped and shoulders padded, denim was acid-washed and oversized, and fabrications included transparent shades reminiscent of goggles found in science labs. Exaggerated silhouettes meant hands were enclosed in elongated sleeves and outerwear dropped loosely off shoulders, while form-fitting turtlenecks hid underneath boxy duster coats. Defined lines cut sharp figures in elegant tailoring as co-ords of pleated wide-leg trousers met funnel neck shirts and sleeveless blazers were fashioned into thigh-skimming mini dresses. On foot, skin-tight leather boots brushed the thigh and a collaboration with Dr. Martens was unveiled, adding a punkish spirit to MM6’s casual conceptualism.
