Comfy clothes

JW Anderson SS21
Fashion | 2 July 2020

Jonathan Anderson has done the seemingly impossible: creating not just one collection during lockdown, but two. Menswear and womenswear, with over 70 looks between them.

And this feat is even more impressive when you see the results. Sans show, guests and models, Jonathan Anderson let his creativity roll for his SS21 menswear presentation. Presented on “fictional characters – enlarged young male personalities” – this season’s offering saw the Irish designer further explore ideas of childhood, playfulness and masculinity.

“Within a context of cozy domesticity” (a feeling we know well) Anderson has rounded his volumes and relaxed silhouettes, catering to the type of comfort you never want to leave. Crafted with an off-kilter playfulness, tailored pieces are cut to accommodate movement while slouchy, patchwork jockey coats come with patch pouches. This joie de vivre continues as JW Anderson tropes – pillow sweaters, cropped trousers, loafer mules – are reinterpretated with the fun addition of pom-poms, blanket stitching and florals, guiding us towards a world of optimism and “freewheeling amusement.” Times might be tough right now, but Anderson is offering a brilliant slice of comfort to see us through.
