Years ago, Kings Cross was an area of London more synonymous with prostitutes and pilled-up ravers than the highest echelons of fashion. Then Central Saint Martins moved its fashion campus here in 2011.

Today, Sarah Burton presented her latest menswear collection under a disused railway, over cobbles, with smoke stalking the air. If last season was East End gangster, this was something altogether more historic, in silk, cream and white lace, jacquards and brocades with Mary-Jane shoes.

Immaculate as always, Burton continues to marry artistry with technique – the results are never less than stirring. But just what were her graceful, aristocratic tribe, less perfect than their impression (look closely for fading and fraying), doing wandering through a gritty area like this?

There’s something to ponder. Though they probably ended up drinking that blue cocktail at Shrimpy’s.
