Throwback

80s cult classic The Dark Crystal is getting a prequel

Netflix has announced a 10-part prequel series to Jim Henson’s 1982 cult fantasy film The Dark Crystal.

Titled The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, the series will return to the world of Thra long before the events played out in the original film. The series will be directed and executive produced by Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) and will start shooting this fall, using puppets made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

When first released, The Dark Crystal wowed and scared audiences in equal measure through its then-groundbreaking animatronics and imaginative characters.

While Netflix did not provide details regarding a release date for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, it did release a teaser video, combining an interview with the late Jim Henson discussing his 1982 movie with prototype creature creations for the new series.

This announcement continues a recent trend of 80s TV and film throwbacks, from Stranger Things and its many cult references to the recent TV adaptation of Wes Craven’s Scream, and follows recent news that a follow-up to Henson’s equally bizarre classic Labyrinth, the 1980s musical fantasy film that starred the late David Bowie, is in the works – we can’t wait for that.
