Martine Rose debuts her FW16 collection with a film inspired by original club kid Steve Terry

Marine Rose has been on a two-season hiatus. Don’t let that dissuade you, though: her gear is still great. Connecting with director and editor Sharna Osborne, Martine Rose is back with a film to show her new line-up of boys.

Steve Terry’s ‘Wildlife Archive’ of 70s clubs, gigs and underground, male erotica served as core stimulus for Rose during the beginning of her FW16 path (his colour-soaked imagery no doubt guided Rose’s hues, particularly the way the film was edited). Whilst snapshots of private moments proved an apt pairing influence for the moving-image’s theme (voyeurism, especially).

Directed by Sharna Osborne, the video draws on inspiration from Mark E. Smith, controversial artist known notoriously for his black-and-white, sexually charged imagery, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Smokey’s How Far Will You Go?, bundled together in one, VHS-styled reel. (A purportedly throwback to gay-photography legend, James Bidgood, and queer-film pioneer, Kenneth Anger.) Have a gander.

Film credits: directed and edited: Sharna Osborne; produced: Martine Rose and Hugh Egan Westland; music: I’ll Always Live YouSmokey, 2015, Chapter Music; styling: Tamara Rothstein.
