It’s been a big few days for Alexander Wang: late last week came the announcement that the New York designer will soon part ways with Balenciaga, followed in a matter of hours by the opening of his eponymous line’s largest store to date.

The store is Wang’s first standalone in Europe and it’s epic to match, the designer enlisting Belgian architect Vincent van Duysen to completely rewrite a former post office on Mayfair’s Albemarle Street. Comprising three floors and 625 square metres, the space brings together Wang’s men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, his T By Alexander Wang clothing line and OBJECTS homewares and accessories range.

Wang’s global appeal can be widely attributed to his unflinching dedication to urban minimalism, a code deconstructed by van Duysen at ground level in the new space. Tradition confronts innovation via materials like rubber, distressed chrome and embossed leathers, chrome tubing defines display features amid a futuristic geometric grid of travertine beams and columns. Then there’s the furniture: a mix of custom pieces and the re-edition of 1970s Italian design by Gianfranco Frattini by Tacchini, plus sculptural works by artists Ben Storms and Gerard Kuijpers.

Light and shadow expertly informs a space that will no doubt serve Wang well – worth a linger.
