Is it just us, or is it hot out there? Whether you’re a sun goddess or shadow dweller, London really gets good during the summer months. So catch a film, slunk through a gallery, hit up a gig, sit in a park, you do you.

Film

There’s never enough Josh O’Connor
Despite already starring in a major movie in cinemas at the moment (that tennis one you may have heard about), Josh O’Connor has another film out this weekend. In Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, O’Connor plays a British archaeologist who gets involved in tomb-raiding in 1980s Italy. Premiering to rave reviews at Cannes last May, La Chimera has been a long time coming but the wait will absolutely have been worth it.

La Chimera is in cinemas now.

Theatre

Isabelle Huppert, solo
The legend of cinema that is Isabella Huppert will be at the Barbican this weekend performing solo in Mary Said What She Said. Less a play and more an extended monologue, Mary Said What She Said comes from the mind of Robert Wilson, the acclaimed American avant-garde theatre maker. The text was written by the novelist Darryl Pinckney who drew it from the letters written by Mary Queen of Scots as she was awaiting her execution. It’ll be a blink and you miss it production however, as Huppert will only be doing four performances from this Friday to Sunday, so do not miss this!

Gig

An evening with Scott Lavene
Master wordsmith and musician Scott Lavene is setting up at Rough Trade West for a stripped-back set and signing, celebrating his latest album Disneyland in Dagenham. The album takes its name from the Walt Disney Company’s abandoned plans to build their first European theme park in Essex, and the record reflects the contrasting worlds of 80ss Dagenham and glitzy Disney – told with signature storytelling wit, rhythm and rhyme.

Scott Lavene plays at Rough Trade West on Friday 10th May – tickets here.

Exhibition

Mam! There’s a photographer at the door!
Nick Waplington’s snapshots of 90s British life are pure nostalgia for those of us now hitting 30 (life over). London’s Hamiltons Gallery brings together a selection of previously unseen works and new works from the photographer’s iconic 1991 series Living Room. Filled with colour, laughter, fights, family, bad hairstyles and ugly carpets, images capture a pure reflection of British life told through the lens of the community of the Broxtowe house estate in Nottingham.

Nick Waplington: Living Room runs until 1st June.

Food + Drink

It’s BBQ season
Following his Brixton Market residency, Rubens Reubens has relocated just down the road to Peckham Arches, where he’s serving up some of the best BBQ action in town. As the sun shines, chow down on some tasty smoked meats and veggie dishes, all cooked in Rubens’ signature style – ie. delicious. If you’ve been to Rubens before, you’ll know we’re talking burnt ends, spare ribs, ranch slaw, pork shoulder, puffed cracking and lots of pickles.

Rubens Reubens is at Peckham Arches Friday – Sunday.
