Still from Challengers by Luca Guadagnino, 2024

It’s nearly May but it still feels like winter outside (sorry for bringing up the weather, we know it’s boring) so we’ve made sure this weekend’s combo is full of plans that avoid the outdoors.

Film

Game, set, match!
Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic offering has been on everybody’s minds since the trailer dropped last summer, now the time has finally come for you to settle down in your cinema seat and watch the whole thing in all its steamy, sexy glory. Zendaya stars as Tashi, a tennis player-turned-coach who has helped transform her husband, Art, played by Mike Faist, from a mediocre player into a world-famous Grand Slam winner. Josh O’Connor’s character Patrick is the closing corner of the love triangle, a once brilliant but now burnt-out hopeful, who not only used to be Art’s best friend but Tashi’s former boyfriend. It’s tense, it’s pacey and it’s hot – what more could you want?

Challengers is out in cinemas now.

Exhibition

My Sorry Ass
New York-based photographer Devlin Claro is inspired by the environment in which he lives, imbuing each of his images with the feeling of trying to locate a sense of self in a world overlooking the individual. Playing on our own assumption of photography’s ability to convey the truth, Claro’s images offer dreamlike serenity in an abstract reality. Currently on display at South London gallery Qrystal Partners, founded by Supriya Lele and Donald Ryan, the photographer’s latest exhibition My Sorry Ass is a must-see.

My Sorry Ass runs at Qrystal Partners until May 25th, more info here

Don’t You Remember? by Devlin Claro, 2024

Club Night

Berghain in London
At the end of last year, Ziber Club made its return to the East London scene and it’s back with another wild one tonight. For the event’s spring edition, Berghain resident Phase Fatale will headline alongside Josh Quinton, Matt Skully, Jerome, Glotzer and CoKendrah. Celebrating the kaleidoscope of queerness as a night out which finds itself somewhere between “a leather bar, a derelict club, a candy shop and a house party,” you’ll find yourself at home in the middle of the venue’s pulsing dancefloor.

Ziber will take place tonight at Millmead Industrial Estate, Mill Mead Rd, N17 9QU, more info here

Theatre

Bride Wars
This weekend at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Larmes du couteau and Full Moon in March are being resurrected from operatic obscurity and presented as a double-bill in the Linbury Theatre. Helmed by Eleanor Burke and Harriet Taylor, two stage directors who are currently part of the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Artists Company, these short operas are a director’s treasure chest, replete with odd librettos, wild characters, and scores that rattle against convention.

Larmes des couteau/Full Moon in March will run at the Royal Opera House until May 4th, more information here

LARMES DE COUTEAU / FULL MOON IN MARCH, Royal Opera House 2024. Directors Eleanor Burke and Harriet Taylor. JETTE PARKER ARTISTS.

Gig

South London Renaissance
For the past three weeks, Hennessy has linked up with South East London’s newest live music venue, The Queen of the South and cultural platform Cloud X to bring a series of gigs to the capital and this weekend’s closing party is set to be a big one. Cult West London rapper Finn Foxell will headline, bringing his fresh soundscape south of the river alongside Brixton-based musician Santiano Le Saint.

The gig will take place at The Queen of the South tonight, more info here
