To the woods

Blair Witch Project is back!
By Barry Pierce | Film+TV | 11 April 2024

It looks like we’re getting a fresh new take on the Blair Witch very soon. The 1999 found footage original changed horror films forever, being so well made that many people thought it was authentic. But after some less than successful spin-offs (the less said about Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, the better) it looks like Jason Blum’s production company Blumhouse is going it try to revitalise the legendary film.

As the production company behind some of the better horror films in recent years, such as Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day, Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone, and Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN, having Blumhouse behind the new Blair Witch does elicit some hope that the new film will be good.

Doing the new Blair Witch is something of a full circle moment for Jason Blum too as Paranormal Activity, a film that owes much of its existence to the techniques pioneered in The Blair Witch Project, was Blumhouse’s first major horror franchise.

There isn’t much information about the new film just yet, but it looks set for a 2025 release.
