Jacob Ogden’s interest is piqued by his subject’s vulnerability, capturing people in their purest form on his medium format camera and producing intimate portraits of friends, lovers and families. Currently based in Los Angeles, America’s West Coast becomes a character in its own right as Californian sunsets cast honeyed shadows across Ogden’s subjects, or the Golden Gate Bridge looms in the background of a perfectly framed portrait.

Inspired by the likes of Larry Sultan and Curran Hatleberg, Ogden’s laidback style makes for a body of work akin to the environment in which it has been made, embodying a laidback and spontaneous ease. All of that aside, he’s equally as fulfilled by snapping pics of his beloved dog Frieda – a habit we’re all guilty of.

Name: Jacob Ogden

Age: 36

Location: Los Angeles

Camera of choice: RZ

Preferred subject: Someone who isn’t afraid to show their vulnerability.

Favourite time of day to shoot: I don’t have one!

Most recent photo: The most recent photo I took would likely be of my dog Frieda — I’m sure my friends are tired of me sending pics of her to them.

How you first became interested in photography: I first became interested in photography after a traumatic snowboarding injury back in my early 20s, I documented my recovery. It was an eye-opening experience for me.

Biggest influence: I’m very drawn to films. I was overwhelmed by Celine Song’s Past Lives, and often reflect on Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight.

Favourite book: As someone who loves to collect photo books, my all-time favourite book or series would have to be Larry Sultan’s The Valley. In every single frame you can feel his intention, it’s one of those books where you can get lost in the details – Larry is the GOAT for a reason. A close second would be Curran Hatleberg’s Lost Coast, truly a gem.

Current project/s: I’ve quietly been working on a project for a little over a year now, that’s all I have for you.
