Adam Jones’ perfect pub: the Welsh designer takes us through his ideal boozer
By Barry Pierce | Fashion | 13 March 2024

James Joyce had Dublin. Monet had his lily pond. Adam Jones has the pub. The Welsh designer has become a major voice in British fashion for his tongue-in-cheek bar towel vests and his designs that take from beer taps and butchers’ aprons. On top of being a designer, Jones is also a connoisseur of the British boozer, someone who can recommend you a proper pub within a 50-metre radius of any location in London – try him!

Naturally, we had to ask the man himself about his perfect pub – here’s what he wants, from the music to the atmosphere, to what’s on tap…

Ideal furniture/interior style
“First of all, the pub will be in a busy area but off the beaten track, they’re the best ones. Central London has the best pubs, the ones tucked away that people don’t know about.

I quite like it when you walk in and the regulars stare, it means you’ve found something good – they’re surprised you found it and it’s these places that are the best ones, if-you-know-you-know pubs.

I like red walls, maybe some wood panelling, a beer-soaked garish carpet, like something you’d see in a stately home. I want just bar stools with round tables, photos of countryside scenes plastered on the walls, it would be full of trinkets from a time gone-by, a shelf of Toby jugs.”

Ideal music
“Just some background noise, the low hum of some 80s music, Bronski Beat and the like, drowned out by chatter and clinking glasses. I like to be able to chat in a pub or let my mind wander, it’s where I get the best ideas.”

Ideal beer on tap
“Any boring basic lager, Amstel, Stella, Carlsberg, Carling and, of course, Wrexham Lager. All in a straight glass please, I don’t want a Stella in a goblet or a chalice.”

Ideal cocktail
“Pubs should not do cocktails, it annoys everyone, it means long waits at the bar and no one wants that. I will have a baby Guinness though.”

Ideal bar snack
“Walkers Salt & Vinegar crisps, but I don’t tend to eat in pubs as it takes up too much room where the beer should be. It slows me down and means an early night, I’d rather pubs didn’t serve food.”

Any extras?
“The pub would have lock-ins where you can smoke inside, they bring out those cut glass ashtrays and plonk them down on every table presuming you will be smoking, and you pour your own pints after hours.”

Name of your dream pub
“I might call it The Bassey after our Shirley, or The Vorderman after Carol, she’s more my neck of the woods, she’s like the People’s Princess of North Wales, actually the People’s Princess is a good pub name.”
