Portrait of an artist

Hedi Slimane photographs French movie legend Jean-Luc Godard
Fashion | 23 July 2020

For his ongoing portrait of a performer/artist series, Hedi Slimane‘s latest photography subject is legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.

Shot by Slimane in Switzerland in July 2020, the black and white imagery sees Godard surrounded by film equipment as he smokes a cigar and reads from a book. This latest chapter in the photographic series comes after the Celine designer selected Godard’s 1965 film Pierrot Le Fou as part of a specially curated film list created in conjunction with streaming service Mubi.

Known for his visionary new wave style and ability to tap into the zeitgeist of youth, Godard’s influence stretches wide, and the line from his work to Slimane’s own at Celine is clear to see: designing a lifestyle for today’s Parisian youth via a slick imprint energised by past youthquakes.
