For Dior‘s new FW20 men’s campaign, Kim Jones and Steven Meisel have collaborated on a project inspired by the tropical climes of Florida, where the house held its pre-fall collection in December last year.
That distant, pre-lockdown reality is recalled by the black and white illustrations of Shawn Stüssy, the 80s surf legend and Jones’ childhood idol with whom he collaborated on last year’s show to rapturous acclaim. Stüssy’s floral illustrations and signature take on the Dior logo return for this campaign, scrawled over the walls and floor and worn by models too, in a collection that speaks of Jones’ uncanny ability to mesh high and low.
Riffing on the idea of planting seeds and encouraging growth (a reference to the wave of home growers under lockdown perhaps), the accompanying video showcases the best of the collection. There’s the streetwear-inspired side: the Saddle Bag that proved an instant success, the new Dior Air trainer made with the same leather as Dior’s bags, the Shabba Ranks-style rings, the floral bucket hat, as well as the exquisite pieces of tailoring, like those trench coats and shirting, that blended so seamlessly.
