“Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I’ll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger ’til it goes ‘click.'”

Even for The Big Lebowski and its inimitable list of endlessly quotable lines, the above gem – courtesy of the hair-netted Jesus Quintana, played by John Turturro – surely comes in near the top. Fanatics of the film, known in other circles as Dudeists, must surely be salivating at the prospect of reuniting with Quintana and his tongue (both his sharp wit and those smutty flicks) which has taken a giant step forward with the confirmed arrival date of The Jesus Rolls and its first trailer.

The spin-off, which was written and directed by Turturro and first announced last year, will pick up the story of Quintana after he is released from prison (not a huge surprise). Rather than finding himself on the straight and narrow, he and his pals runs into trouble with a gun-toting hairdresser played by Jon Hamm.

Although Turturro has previously made clear the film would not stick closely to the world of The Big Lebowski (he has instead based a lot of the story on Bertrand Blier’s 1975 comedy, Going Places), the Coen brothers gave him their blessing to resume the cult character. Starring Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Audrey Tautou, Pete Davidson, and Christopher Walker, the film’s extended production process promises to be worth the wait.

The Jesus Rolls opens in the US February 28, 2020
