transcendent experience

Spiritualized will be performing in Hackney surrounded by 1001 candles
Music | 12 September 2019

As part of Somewhere, an international music festival based in Tokyo and London, this weekend sees cult British band Spiritualized perform at Hackney Empire surrounded by 1001 lit candles.

Having launched in Tokyo earlier this year, Somewhere is taking up residence in Hackney for a series of ten intimate September nights backdropped by the festival’s trademark 1001 candles – having already played host to two acoustic nights courtesy of Pete Doherty and Carl Barat earlier this month.

This unique performance follows And Nothing Hurt, the eighth record from Spiritualized – and first as a solo project for founder Jason Pierce. Formed in 1990 by Pierce – the legendary Spaceman 3 frontman – the band has been through a revolving door of line-up changes and sonic evolutions, leading to a transcendent, fluid space-pop sound that has shifted from exercised restraint to warped-out maximalism. With a band name meaning to be infused with the spiritual and consumed by religious fire, performing in front of Somewhere’s dramatic candle-lit scene sure makes sense.
